Only material damage reported in Isla Mujeres fire

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A palapa fire in a residential area of Isla Mujeres caused a stir among police and firemen Tuesday as they battled the intense flames.

The fire was reported in the area of La Gloria on Tuesday afternoon. According to the police report, officials from Civil Protection, Public Safety and the Red Cross rushed to the site to extinguish flames before they spread to other nearby homes.

Once out, an investigation by Civil Protection determined the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. The owner of the home, 55-year-old José R. M. arrived to find his home in ruins. Police report no deaths or injuries, only material damage.
