One killed three arrested in Chetumal police shootout

Chetumal, Q.R. — Police in Chetumal were seen with their guns drawn against a car with four occupants wearing tactical FGR gear. Police surrounded the vehicle and took those from inside into custody after an exchange of gunfire Friday afternoon.

The exchange of gunfire happened when officers in Chetumal were made aware of an abduction in progress. While patrolling Avenida Erick Paolo, a citizen reported a man being forced into a vehicle.

Rural Police officers located the vehicle reported in the broad daylight abduction at which time they were fired upon. Four people from inside the car opened fire against police. Offices repelled the attack injuring two of the four armed men and killing one.

One of the kidnappers shot by police died at the scene. Two others remain in custody under police guard in hospital. The fourth was arrested and handcuffed to the police unit. The man they kidnapped was rescued without injury. Police have not provided a possible motive for his kidnapping.

In a statement, the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC) said “the Secretaría de Seguridad Ciudadana (SSC) of Quintana Roo reports that today around 12:30 p.m., elements of the Rural Police were carrying out a security patrol on Avenida Erick Paolo between Avenida Nicolás Bravo in the Solidaridad neighborhood of Chetumal when they observed a subject making signs towards them, pointing toward other individuals that they were trying to force a citizen to get into a vehicle.

“Following the established security protocols, the officers approached the vehicle in question at which time the occupants of the vehicle began to shoot at police. Faced with this aggression, the officers repelled the attack resulting in the injury of two of the alleged aggressors and one shooting death.

“It is important to note that although the suspects were wearing tactical vests with the legend “FGR”, it was confirmed that they did not belong to the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic (FGR).

“Following the confrontation, the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Quintana Roo (FGE) was notified and will be in charge of the corresponding investigations, given that the vehicle involved, a Volkswagen Bora, was identified as having been used in high-impact criminal acts in the municipality of Othón P. Blanco.”

Earlier this week, police found an abandoned vehicle off a Cancun roadway. Inside the vehicle officers located tactical gear and tire spikes. The company truck was found with an outstanding auto theft report from 2024.
