One killed several injured in multi-vehicle Riviera Maya highway crash

Akumal, Q.R. — One was person was confirmed dead at the scene of a multi-vehicle accident Friday. State Civil Protection said the accident happened near the Bahia Principe hotel Friday morning.

Three vehicles were involved in the morning crash.

Two of the involved vehicles were heading south at the time of the accident. According to initial reports, the crash occurred when three vehicles collided, one of which was a parked van.

One car was forced onto its roof and located in the central median.

The second car was found demolished in the center of the highway. From that car, one woman, reported to be an Asian-American tourist, was pronounced dead. Her body was found laying on the highway outside the vehicle.

A second person from the car, a man, was rushed to hospital. Several people were found injured inside the hatchback that flipped onto its roof.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The State Civil Protection Coordination reports a multi-vehicle accident involving several private cars on the Tulum-Akumal Federal Highway heading south near the Bahia Principe Hotel.

“The National Guard and medical units are already on the scene attending to the injured. The public is advised to exercise caution when traveling in this area,” Coordinación Estatal de Protección Civil Quintana Roo reported Friday regarding the accident.

Several ambulances arrived to attend to the injured.

Other motorists who saw the accident stopped to help. Emergency services from Tulum attended to the scene. National Guard Highways cordoned off the area to divert traffic and facilitate rescue efforts.

The official number of injured is not known. A cause for the accident is still under investigation however, initial reports say one of the involved cars was attempting to pass the other when it hit a van parked on the highway shoulder.
