Cozumel, Q.R. — A woman was arrested for an accident in Cozumel that claimed the life of one and left a second in hospital.
According to Armando Pérez Pérez, commander of the Ministerial Police, the person deemed responsible for the accident was driving at excessive speed under the influence of alcohol, which caused the death of Candelario P.M. and life-threatening injuries to his wife, Hermelinda Maás Canul, who remains in hospital.
The accident occurred around 8:50 p.m. when the unnamed female allegedly responsible for causing the accident hit the couple while crossing the street. She then fled the scene, leaving the vehicle abandoned, but was arrested minutes later by agents of al Sistema de Justicia Penal Acusatorio.
Reports say the injured wife lost a lower limb in the accident. While she was from the island, her husband was originally from Izamal, Yucatan. They had just left a Nueva Jerusalem church meeting where he was a pastor when the accident happened.
Police say when the vehicle was ran through Plataforma México, it came up as having been involved in previous accidents. The driver of the vehicle has been charged with manslaughter, wrongful injuries and damages.
