New Commander preparing to fight state crime with fresh security strategy

Chetumal, Q.R. — Newly appointed Commander, Gerardo Serna Melchor, says they are preparing a fresh security strategy to implement throughout the state. Serna Melcho was named Commander of the 34th Military Zone Wednesday.

After his swearing in ceremony, he said that the instruction of the Secretary of National Defense has been to reduce crime rates and violent events in Quintana Ro. With that, he says they will be working in coordination with members of the state and municipal security forces to create a strategy.

“We have instructions from the General Secretary of Defense to join the effort in the fight against insecurity, to join the security strategy for peace in Quintana Roo. The most important thing is to reduce the chain of homicides that are generated by the existence of drug dealing points to reduce violence in Quintana Roo,” he said.

Gerardo Serna said that he has an experienced team and that he will be working to reduce these incidents and strengthen the security of Quintana Roo.

“There is a lot of work to be done. We have a good team and we have to contribute to moving the issue forward,” he added.

On Wednesday, the head of the Government Secretariat attested to the change of command of the Command of the 34th Military Zone. Diplomated Brigadier General of the General Staff (DEM), Gerardo Serna Melchor, carried out the inauguration and Flag Protest as the new Commander of the 34th Military Zone.

On behalf of Governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, the Secretary of Government, Cristina Torres Gómez, witnessed the ceremony in the Civic Plaza of the 7th Motorized Cavalry Regiment.

Cristina Torres wished success to Gerardo Serna Melchor, as the new Commander of the 34th Military Zone, as well as the outgoing DEM Brigadier General, Héctor Jiménez Aldana.

The new commander of the 34th Military Zone specializes in issues of national security, ports and airports, combating crime and drug trafficking. He has been Military Attaché at the Mexican embassy in Cuba and Commander of the 3rd Military Zone in Baja California Sur.
