Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — The Puerto Aventuras Marina will join the Sargassum Management and Response Strategy with support of the Navy. For the next season, the seaside town will have a dedicated sargassum collection vessel to help control land-felled seaweed.

The Secretary of the Navy (Semar) has confirmed they will provide a sargassum collection vessel in support of the seaweed collection efforts at sea and on Puerto Aventuras beaches.
The agreement was confirmed during a meeting between Rear Admiral Topiltzin Tlacaelel Flores Jaramillo, Coordinator of the Semar’s strategy against sargassum and Alfonso Serrano Gómez, President of the Puerto Aventuras Residents Association.
According to the Rear Admiral, their federal support will include personnel and equipment to reinforce the cleanup on land as well as actions to protect the community’s sargassum barrier from storms or other weather conditions that require its preventive removal.
The meeting was held after Puerto Aventuras residents agreed to install their own anti-sargassum barrier earlier this year, however, the barrier did not arrive ahead of the sargassum.

Now that it has arrived, current weather conditions prevent its installation. According to a statement from the Residents’ Association, the work will be postponed until safe conditions exist, which they hope is in coming days.
