Members of violent criminal group arrested in Cozumel

Cozumel, Q.R. — Three members of a violent criminal group have been detained on the island of Cozumel. Elements of the Investigative Police made the arrests Friday.

According to a statement from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), police arrested three male persons for their alleged involvement in events possibly constituting drug-related crimes in the form of drug dealing.

During their arrests, police seized various doses of possible narcotics and a firearm. The detained are Luis Ángel “N”, Jorge “N” and Benito Jesús “N”, who underwent a routine check after police officers detected them acting suspiciously in an area of the Carretera Costera Sur.

“Among their belongings, the suspects had various doses of green, dry plant with characteristics of marijuana and white solid fragments similar to the drug known as crystal, in addition to a pistol-type firearm.”

The preliminary investigation links these people to a criminal group cell that controls drug sales and the collection of “property fees” in the tourist area of Puerta Maya and in other parts of the island.

“They are considered the main generator of violence in the municipality,” the FGE said.
