Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A five hour meeting between police and city officials came after expressed concerns along with the resignation of the municipality’s director of Municipal Preventive Police.
Playa del Carmen mayor, Laura Beristain reported that after a nearly five-hour meeting, agreements were reached to guarantee the performance of the municipal police.
“We are working every day. Recently we had a sad, sad night of violence. We are working, seeking the pacification of the municipality, the state and from the country. We will always do everything in our power, within our reach, to ensure that families are in peace.
“It is an important challenge, it is a municipality, a tourist town at the international level. It is also a place of great success,” she expressed.
On Friday, the director of the Policía Municipal Preventiva, Didier Váquez Méndez, gave his public resignation in a press conference, citing lack of support from the municipality after a recent series of crimes and murders.
He also said that he resigned of his own free will and that the police will continue to function normally.
“Let’s not fall into ideologies that hurt the work we need to do as a team today to dignify the police,” added Beristain.
