Cancun, Q.R. — Mexican airport authorities in Cancun seized currency worth nearly 2 million pesos in undeclared cash from a traveler. The man’s luggage was searched after an X-ray revealed banknotes of varying currencies.

The search and subsequent seizure took place inside Terminal 2 last month when Mexican Customs found the money.
“During the inspection of international passengers, banknotes of 14 different currencies were found inside a bag,” Customs of Mexico reported in a statement.
The finding was made as a result of inspection and surveillance actions carried out at Cancun Customs. Personnel from the National Customs Agency of Mexico (ANAM), in coordination with members of the National Guard (GN), seized cash of various currencies during the clearance of international passengers at Terminal 2 of the Cancun International Airport.
During the inspection, the staff detected a gray bag, inside of which were found bills of different denominations and currencies.
“The seized cash consisted of 14 different currencies including $21,486 USD, Mexican pesos, and €5,895 British pounds. Also found were Brazilian reais, Bahamian dollars, Canadian dollars, Costa Rican colones, Belizean dollars, Barbadian dollars, Jamaican dollars, shillings, zlotys, and rubles.

“In total, the cash had a value equivalent to 1,791,734 Mexican pesos,” Agencia Nacional de Aduanas de México (ANAM) confirmed.

The man, who has not been identified by name or nationality, was arrested and his cash seized by airport officials.
