LP gas explosion blows out door of Cozumel eatery

Cozumel, Q.R. — An LP gas explosion inside a Cozumel burger business left a metal door buckled. The front door to the 30th Avenue eatery was nearly blown out when a 30 liter tank exploded early Friday morning.

Civil Protection and firefighters responded to reports of the strong explosion inside a building on 30th Avenue and 6th Street in the 10 de Abril neighborhood. They arrived to find the inside of restaurant had been blown out due to an accumulation of gas.

Once inside, they removed two additonal 30 liter tanks to avoid further explosions.

Cozumel Civil Protection did not report any injuries in the gas blast, but did find structural damage to the building. Authorities have not said how long the building would be closed.

In a brief statement, Cozumel Police said “police and firefighters responded to a gas explosion at a business in the 10 de Abril neighborhood. No injuries were reported.

“Only structural damage was caused to the building. Two 30 kg gas tanks were removed for safety reasons. Civil Protection conducted an inspection and cordoned off the area for public safety.”
