According to the man’s family, he traveled to the savanna with his kids early Friday morning. The savanna, in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto, is located several kilometers from their community.

The man and his kids had caught a significant number of largemouth bass which they believe likely captured the attention of the crocodile. While the man was grabbing a fish, the reptile suddenly appeared and attacked, biting the man’s right hand and arm.

The man was able to free his hand from the crocodile jaws at which time they called ahead for an ambulance before heading for the hospital in their own vehicle.
