Letters to the Editor: Going deaf! Don’t Come To Isla Mujeres

Don’t come to Isla Mujeres. The Isla Mujeres government should be ashamed of itself.

My sister and I never considered Isla Mujeres (or Mexico) as a third world nation. We are from Canada and love our neighbors to the south, but today was an eye opening experience which has certainly changed our minds.

We rented a house near the airport strip where we usually rent even though we have not been here for several years. We were stunned to find out that there is a power generator located nearby (which has been on since 2:30 this afternoon. It is now 8:07).

It is unbelievably loud, never mind the toxic fumes coming from it, and if this is the way the government of Isla Mujeres thinks of the tourists who come here and spend their Canadian dollars (or American dollars) count us out!

Unless you enjoy the sound of a 747 on take-off, or enjoy listening to a rock concert at full blast, while on vacation.

I had heard that Isla Mujeres has a generator which when on, emits a noise equal to a jet on take off, but until I heard it with my own ears today, I did not believe it. I checked and it was over 105 decibels.

How the government of Isla Mujeres would allow such a monstrous and dangerous machine to operate where it is, without consideration to the people who live nearby (or anywhere for that matter since it’s directly on one of the two roads to and from town), is beyond me.

Our rental is quite close and I have already complained to the home owners, not that I blame them, and have told them my brother and I plan to leave if that bloody machine remains on for much longer.

We plan to leave tomorrow and never return.

GO ELSEWHERE!

Sincerely,
Going Deaf, Isla Mujeres Mistake
