I read an article that was released on January 12th about the exorbitant charges the taxis are charging at the Cancun International Airport. I was in Cancun on November 22nd, 2024 for a 4 day/ 3 night trip with my older brother. I was charged over $90 for a one way taxi ride from Cancun International Airport to the hotel zone.
His credit card was charged numerous times in the amount of 100’s of dollars when he needed a ride between terminals. The taxi cab told him it was only $5 USD, but attempted to charge 100’s of dollars on his card. Thankfully his credit union deactivated his card and none of the charges went through.
I was beyond livid that all of that happened within minutes of landing at the airport and at the start of our vacation. We felt we had no recourse because we arrived on a very late flights and had no pre-arranged transportation. The approach from the taxi company representatives were aggressive and extremely uncomfortable.
Neither one of us will be returning to Cancun, specifically because of this and I was an avid visitor before this experience. I really hope that something is done to prevent this from happening to other people. I provided a screenshot of the 1,850 Mexican pesos charge on my credit card from that cab ride to the hotel zone.
