Akumal, Q.R. — One dead and at least eight injured was the result of a highway crash outside Akumal Friday night. A transport van carrying hotel staff collided with the back of a private vehicle that was reportedly parked along the highway.
The driver of the transport van slammed into the back of the SUV, forcing it forward several meters where it finally overturned into highway vegetation. One person from inside the private vehicle was killed.
Emergency units from Playa del Carmen rushed to the scene where they located a deceased male in the overturned vehicle. The transport van, which was carrying Riviera Maya hotel staff, suffered a significant amount of front end damage due to the highway-speed impact.
Eight people from inside the van were injured. Two of those eight were transferred to Playa del Carmen hospital in serious condition.
Staff from a nearby hotel rushed to the dark highway scene after hearing the commotion where they attempted to assist the injured. National Guard, along with police and ambulances, were at the accident site to direct congested traffic.
The deceased has not been publicly identified. There was no word on possible charges.
