Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — Another Ejido road block was organized in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto Monday. The group blocked a section of the federal 293 highway referred to as the Chetumal-Merida short road.
The group blocked the road to pressure authorities to expedite payment for land being used for the Maya Train project. During their protest, signs were placed demanding the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador make payment for compensation for their lands
Shortly before six in the morning, the protesters took to the road with banners in hand and impeded the flow of vehicles for at least two hours before giving way.
The protesters said they are waiting for some high-ranking federal authority to commit to making the promised payment. State Secretary Cristina Torres said Monday that the Undersecretary was at the site talking with Ejidos to unblock the road.
A backlog of traffic approximately one kilometer long was eventually freed for passage after talks.
