Isla Mujeres motorcycle driver killed skidding into a pole performing stunts

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Residents near the Amaité neighborhood of mainland Isla Mujeres reported a death Sunday. A motorcycle driver was found dead Sunday afternoon after skidding into a pole.

Police were notified of the single vehicle accident at the end of the Rancho Viejo Avenue around 3:00 p.m. Witnesses reported the male driving very fast, performing road stunts when he suddenly lost control of his bike.

Residents said the motorcycle skidded for several meters before crashing into the base of a street light in the middle of the road.

Responding officers found the driver in the central median at the base of a streetlight. An ambulance was called, however, paramedics confirmed the driver was deceased.

Police closed traffic in both directions of the Rancho Viejo Avenue, rerouting drivers around the scene.

Initial reports indicate that the driver was not wearing a helmet and the motorcycle was without license plates. Neighbors said he was performing stunts at the time of the accident.

The avenue remained closed while authorities investigated and the motorcycle and driver removed from the street.
