Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Local officials say they are working hard to obtain the island’s second and third Blue Flag beach, noting that for the last several months, they have their sights set on Playa Norte.
After a verification tour by personnel of la Fundación Europea de Educación Ambiental along with the Federal Maritime Zone, they learned that the beach qualifies.
Kerem Pinto Aguilar, director of the Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (Zofemat), explained that for the past several months, officials have been working on ensuring the island’s popular Playa Norte and Playa Albatros beach areas would qualify for Blue Flag certification.
“The auditor who accompanied us to through verification route acknowledged the important advances that have been made on these beaches,” she said adding that “Playa Norte already has the 33 quality criteria that are required to be certified with the Blue Flag. We will continue working, and in the near future, we hope to raise the flag on this beach,” she said.
She said that in coming months, likely June or July, Playa Centro will validate its Blue Flag status for another year, while Playa Norte and Playa Albatros would be certified for the first time.
