Irregular residents with 3 million bill protest power cut in Cancun

Cancun, Q.R. — A group of people from an irregular settlement in Cancun placed a roadblock along a city artery in protest of an electrical cut.

Approximately 50 residents from the irregular settlement of Avante blocked Avenida José López Portillo in both directions after the Federal Electricity Commission cut off their service for a three-year debt. The roadblock, which consisted of sticks, trees, tires and stones, was placed around 6:15 p.m. causing traffic issues.

Residents were demanding their electricity be restored, saying their own electric committee was corrupt. Irregular settlements are able to be connected to CFE as long as they have a electric committee that collects payments from residents and ensures state-run CFE is paid.

Jorge Aguilar Osorio, general secretary of the Benito Juárez City Council, says the outstanding electric bill from the Avante settlement is nearly 3 million peso.
