In first six months over 28,000 people transported to Cancun beaches on free RutaMar city bus

Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun City Hall says more than 28,000 people have used the free RutaMar beach bus transportation. The city project has been up and running only six months and has already transported thousands of residents.

Cancun Mayor Ana Paty Peralta says the RutaMar program has been used by over 28,000 residents, transporting them free of charge to the public beaches of Cancun. The city project has consolidated itself as one of the social mobility strategies with the greatest impact in the city.

Six months after its launch, it has demonstrated that mobility can also be a tool for inclusion and social justice.

“Behind every trip there is a story,” she said. “That of a mother who can spend an afternoon at the beach with her children without worrying about transportation costs or of young people who find spaces for healthy social interaction on the weekend, or senior citizens who once again enjoy the sea that is part of Cancun’s identity.”

For a city built around its beaches, ensuring that everyone can enjoy them also represents guaranteeing the right to the city and to public space.

Currently, RutaMar operates Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., through two circuits that connect different points of the city with the main public beaches of the destination, allowing Cancun residents to travel comfortably.

Héctor Sánchez Tirado, the General Director of the Municipal Urban Development Planning Institute says city mobility is about more than street and traffic lights.

“When we talk about mobility, we usually think about streets, traffic lights, or transportation.

“RutaMar reminds us that we are also talking about people and quality of life. Each user represents a family that was able to enjoy a day at the beach or simply take advantage of a public space that also belongs to them,” he said.

He said in addition to the results achieved, the program continues to evolve. During these first six months, operational adjustments, route improvements, signage, and user support have been implemented with the aim of continuously refining the service and responding to the needs of the community.

For Cancun City Council, RutaMar is part of a comprehensive vision of mobility promoted by Mayor Ana Paty Peralta, where the objective is not only to move people from one point to another, but to generate better opportunities for access, coexistence and well-being for the people of Cancun.
