Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A highway crash between a passenger van and car left one dead and six seriously injured. The high speed highway accident happened Friday afternoon near the town of Santa Amalia in the municipality of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
Motorists who witnessed the deadly 2:00 p.m. crash notified authorities. National Guard Roads Division were the first on scene, arriving to find a totaled car and overturned van with15 injured, six seriously.
Rescue efforts were also made by other motorists who stopped to help National Guard free people from inside the van. Two Red Cross units arrived to attend to the injured. Due to the large number of injured people, personnel from the National Emergency Commission joined in the rescue and pre-hospital care.
Firemen were requested when authorities realized the driver of the car was trapped. The jaws of life were used to cut off the door and free the driver who was transferred to the Felipe Carrillo Puerto General Hospital where he later died.
A cause for the accident is not known. The name of the deceased has not been made public.
