Government says inclusion policy will ensure beach access to everyone

Cancun, Q.R. — The undersecretary of Planning and Tourism Policy of the Government of Mexico says that they are working on an inclusion policy to ensure everyone has beach access, noting that it is a huge misconception that a concession means privatization.

Simón Levy, the undersecretary of Planning and Tourism Policy of the Government of Mexico, says they are working on an inclusion policy so that everyone will have access to the country’s beaches. He also clarified that a concession does not mean privatization.

“How dangerous it has been to confuse concessions with privatizations, which is why there has been the mistreatment of the people,” he said adding “I cannot imagine that private policemen will spray pepper, intimidate surfers and citizens who want to access what belongs to everyone, which are the beaches of Mexico.”

There has been a lot of misconception that being granted a concession to use a beach area means it is private, which has been the case on several occasions when private security detail have run public sunbathers off beaches in front of businesses such as hotels.

He explained that the beaches belong to everyone and the concessionaires must fulfill their responsibilities, one of which is to avoid violent or illicit situations as well as not prohibit the public from enjoying a federal space.
