Gang member arrested on beach arriving to pick up company extortion payment

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Elements of the Investigative Police carried out an arrest warrant against a male for extortion. Police have identified Fernando Alberto “N”, for his alleged involvement in acts possibly constituting the crime of extortion against a company located in the Continental Zone of Isla Mujeres.

Police say Fernando Alberto “N” is a suspected member of a criminal group dedicated to extortion in the beach area of the Continental Zone.

According to initial investigations, in 2020, he demanded an initial weekly payment of $1,000 USD, threatening that if the amount was not paid, the business would be shut down and the lives of the employees would be threatened.

Several individuals frequented the area to collect extortion payments. Authorities identified Fernando Alberto “N,” who allegedly came on Fridays to receive these payments.

Recently, other people arrived at the location to report that the fee would be reduced to $700, the FGE reported.

Following the report of the incident, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Kidnapping and Extortion requested and obtained an arrest warrant from a judge against the suspect.
