Cancun, Q.R. — The seventh Maya Train unit has arrived at the Cancun station two weeks before the official inauguration of another section. Section 5 north, which runs from Cancun to Playa del Carmen, is set for operations February 29.
On Wednesday, the seventh Tren Maya unit that will be put into circulation arrived from the Hidalgo workshop. The overlength and overweight load arrived at the Cancun Tren Maya station early Wednesday evening.
The four-car load arrived in time for testing before the February 29 inauguration. It was escorted from Hidalgo by National Guard and the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communication and Transportation.
In coming days, the four cars will begin the coupling process which involves assembling the train on the tracks before dynamic tests begin to evaluate the traction and braking system as well as the stability of the train on the tracks.
The seven four-car trains that make up the current Maya Train fleet are of the Xiinbal model, each with a capacity to transport up to 234 passengers over short distances.
Tren Maya has already released the travel schedule for the upcoming section 5 north that will run between Cancun-Puerto Morelos-Playa del Carmen.
Departure times from Cancun will be 9:00 a.m. 12:00 noon and 3:00 p.m., while from Playa del Carmen to Cancun, the departure times will be 10:30 a.m. 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. passing through the Puerto Morelos station in both directions.
Separate early morning schedules have been announced for Cancun, Riviera Maya workers wishing to use the train to get to work.
