Father of severely malnourished Mahahual boy charged

Mahahual, Q.R. — The father of a two year old boy found severely malnourished has been charged with child abandonment. On Thursday, the State Attorney General (FGE) reported that father Carlos “N” had been charged.

“The events occurred on September 2, 2023, in the town of Mahahual when a minor was reported to 911 for being completely abandoned in a home,” the agency reported. Carlos “N” was outfitted with an electronic ankle bracelet and “ordered periodic signatures” until his trial.

Carlos “N” was arrested September 2 after authorities found a boy, not yet three, left alone in a home. He was found in the back yard of the house sitting in a plastic chair sun burned and severely malnourished.

According to Silvia Rueda, the Director of the Chetumal DIF (social services), the child is still being tube fed since he has difficulties with solid food. Rueda says she expects he will remain in hospital for another two weeks.

“The boy is still hospitalized. He is being fed with a tube because it has been very difficult for him to pass his food,” she said.

Authorities were made aware of the situation after neighbors reported seeing him. Authorities have not commented on the whereabouts of the boy’s mother.
