Emergency services spend nearly two hours talking down man from Akumal CFE pole

Akumal, Q.R. — Police were requested by Akumal residents Thursday night after seeing a man high up on a CFE pole. The man entered a substation of the the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) where he was seen squatting on a support beam between two poles.

Residents who noticed him called emergency services around 8:00 p.m.

Civil Protection, municipal police and firemen arrived in response to citizen calls. Emergency services extended another call to CFE personnel to cut power in fear the man would electrocute himself.

Residents watched as CFE personnel arrived and shut down the electrical supply while a emergency rescue team worked to talk the man down.

The man was reported shouting words to the people below, however, due to the distance, it is unknown what he was shouting.

He remaind squatting between the posts nearly two hours before finally agreeing to come down. Authorities have not said why the man climbed the pole or if he was intoxicated at the time.
