Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Q.R. — A large brush fire prompted emergency services along a section of Felipe Carrillo Puerto highway Thursday night. Motorists reported the large wildfire at kilometer 138 of the federal highway.

Firemen were sent to the highway that leads to the town of Tulum where they quickly located the fire.
According to initial reports, the fire started alongside the federal highway and quickly spread through the dry vegetation. Drought conditions and gusty winds fueled flames, generating a dense column of smoke visible from several kilometers.
Members of the fire department ewre successful in preventing the fire from advancing to nearby areas.
The incident resulted in burn0damage only to the surrounding brush. The fire did not affect the highway.
Authorities reiterated their call to the public to avoid practices that could cause these types of incidents including tossing lit cigarette butts out the window.
