Driver killed in head-on Isla Mujeres highway crash

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A head-on crash between bus and a car on an Isla Mujeres roadway has left one person dead. On Friday, medical personnel confirmed the death of the driver of a private vehicle that collided with a staff bus.

A bus collided head on with a MPV early Friday morning May 22, 2026.

The accident happened around 6:20 a.m. on the Isla Blanca highway between a personnel transport bus and a private vehicle. Cancun firemen were requested to extract the female driver from behind the wheel of her crumpled MPV.

By the time she was freed, paramedics found she had already died. The deceased woman has not been named.

The Cancun Fire Department confirmed one dead at the Isla Mujeres scene Friday morning.

“Cancun Fire Department personnel responded to a vehicle accident on the Isla Blanca Highway, heading towards Costa Mujeres, involving two vehicles.

“Upon arrival, a head-on collision between a private vehicle and a passenger bus was confirmed. As a result of the impact, one person died at the scene.

“Firefighters secured the scene, working in coordination with Civil Protection, security authorities, and emergency services.

“We urge the public to drive with caution, respect speed limits, and maintain constant attention while driving.”

The female driver died at the scene May 22, 2026.

Traffic was completely blocked in the area Friday morning while emergency services worked to clear the road from debris including a knocked down streetlight.

Tow trucks also congested the narrow road while they hauled away the involved vehicles. Authorities did not provide a cause for the fatal crash.
