Developer submits MIA for new hotel on Kool Beach Club property

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A construction project of more than $4 million has been submitted to state authorities for the Kool Beach Spa and Hotel plot of land. The land, which is currently occupied by the hotel’s rubble after a gas explosion, is being sought after by a developer.

The developer, who is a promoter of Kool Beach Spa and Hotel, has submitted an Environmental Impact Statement to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The promoter intends to built a hotel and rescue the beachfront.

According to the Environmental Impact Statement (MIA), the document was filed last week.

“On March 14, 2022, a gas explosion was recorded in the kitchen area of the Kool Beach Spa and Hotel, which caused the collapse of the only construction that was on the property, which was divided into two levels (ground floor, Level 1 and Level 2). Therefore, only the removal of rubble will be required to start with new project,” the MIA stated.

The newly proposed hotel will consist of 60 room on four floors. The promoter has quoted an investment of of $4.2 million USD with the creation of an undisclosed number of direct and indirect local jobs.

The proposed project does not only include the construction of a new hotel, but also the recovery of the beachfront and the construction of a 100-meter long pier.

In March, the Kool Beach Club Hotel was destroyed after a kitchen gas explosion. A total of three employees were killed and 18 others, including restaurant patrons, were injured in the blast.
