Deadly hotel shooting in Cancun Hotel Zone targeted attack

Cancun, Q.R. — One person was shot to death in a targeted attack Tuesday in a hotel the Cancun Hotel Zone. According to the State Attorney General, the targeted attack was drug related.

The unidentified man was shot several times and pronounced on scene by responding paramedics. The Tuesday afternoon shooting had municipal and military police at the kilometer 6 scene of the hotel zone around 12:30 p.m.

In a statement, the Riu hotel where the shooting took place said the people involved in the targeted attack were from “outside the hotel”. Their comment was made after some local media suggested hotel employees were involved. The hotel went on to clarify that at no time were employees or tourists injured or involved.

The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) of Quintana Roo issued a statement saying “The FGE of Quintana Roo reports that an investigation was opened for the events recorded in a lodging center located at kilometer 6 of Boulevard Kukulcán in the municipality of Benito Juarez (Cancun).

“The first investigations indicate that this event, where a person lost his life due to the impact of a firearm, occurred in the context of drug-related crimes and at no time were the tourists staying there at risk.”

Further details surrounding the targeted attack are unknown.
