Cozumel, Q.R. — A fellow Cozumel swimmer saved a young teen from drowning Tuesday after he was swept out to sea. The 18-year-old man was swept out into deep water by the current off the eastern shore of Cozumel Tuesday.
An fellow swimmer on Playa San Martin was able to retrieve the young man from the strong rip current and return him to shore. The struggling swimmer was located more than 70 meters from the edge of the water.
The 18 year old from from Sinanché, Yucatán is a visitor to Cozumel. The young man was brought back to the shore where he received medial attention from a naval officer nurse who was on nearby Playa Chen Río.
Two on-duty lifeguards arrived after the teen was brought to the sand to check vital signs. The family decided a hospital transfer was not necessary. The young man was at the beach with his family at the time of the incident.
