Cozumel, Q.R. — Island officers and paramedics were called to the scene of a drowning near Cozumel’s San Martin beach Wednesday. Police located the victim on a sandy area approximately one kilometer from Playa San Martin.

The report of a woman drowning was made through 9-1-1 around 7:00 p.m. According to Cozumel Civil Protection Director Alfredo Rellano, a man who had tried to rescue the woman was found with her when police arrived.
Paramedics pronounced the woman dead at the scene. The man was transferred to hospital for a medical evaluation. The area was cordoned off by security personnel to allow the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) to remove the woman’s body. The woman is reported to have been an island resident and not a visitor.
