Cozumel, Q.R. — The passing bands from tropical depression Cristóbal destroyed about 100 sea turtle nests of the 610 that were registered by municipal authorities along the eastern coastal area of the island.
News of the lost nests comes from Cozumel’s Director of Ecology, Fernando Pola Rodríguez, who reports that the marked nests were erased after strong waves and the intense winds caused by the passing storm last weekend.
He says the loss of the nests is a severe hit to the counts that have been recorded so far this year. Sea turtle nest monitoring is done daily. Already this year, authorities counted 196 loggerhead nests and 414 green sea turtles.
