Cozumel police capture security guards robbing their own place of work

Cozumel, Q.R. — Two men in uniforms were caught leaving the scene of a Cozumel robbery Sunday. Both men have been identified as active security guards who worked at the San Miguel store they robbed.

Police said patrolling officers were flagged down by a citizen who pointed out a blue car leaving the scene.

According to the Secretary of Citizen Security (SSC), the citizen saw the men exit the building though a hole in the wall from where they loaded boxes of merchandise into their car.

The security guards escaped using a company vehicle. March 1, 2026.

Island officers caught up with the driver who was found traveling the wrong way down a one-way street. During an inspection of the Mexico City-plated company vehicle, they found the boxes of merchandise seen by the witness.

Police said Carlos Iván “N” and Williams “N” were arrested as suspects in a robbery.

“In an inter-institutional operation involving members of the Investigation Group of the Secretariat of Citizen Security, the Secretariats of the Navy and National Defense, and Cozumel Municipal Police, officers were on patrol when a man flagged them down, pointing to a blue vehicle driving the wrong way,” the SSC reported Sunday.

“He also indicated that two men were exiting a store through a hole carrying several boxes of merchandise and placing them in the open trunk of the vehicle.

“The incident occurred at the intersection of 75th Avenue South and 15th Street South in the Maravilla neighborhood of Cozumel. The officers explained the nature of the disturbance and conducted a preventive search.

“A blue Kia Rio with Mexico City license plates was seized. Inside the bag were the following items: 10 cell phones, four tablets, two video game consoles, two laptops and two bottles of tequila.

“During the interview, the witness identified the men as security personnel working at the store.

“Given the direct identification and the fact that they were caught in the act, they were taken into custody, along with the evidence, and turned over to the State Attorney General’s Office.”
