Cozumel, Q.R. — Police have made an arrest in the murder of a Cozumel woman whose naked body was found off a highway. The 47 year old woman’s body was found Monday afternoon around 2:00 p.m. by a passing bicyclist.
Police were notified and sent to the scene at kilometer 11 of the transversal highway where they verified the finding. The naked body of an adult woman was found next to a concrete post, lying among vegetation on the side of the highway.
Forensic personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) removed the body which has not yet been publicly identified. Police have since announced an arrest. According to the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the murder is drug related.
“For the crime of femicide in the municipality of Cozumel, the FGE of Quintana Roo reports the arrest of a person for his probable participation in these events. The first investigations indicate that this event is related to robbery and drug use,” the State Attorney General reported in a brief statement.
According to early information, the man alleged responsible drove the victim’s vehicle after her murder. Investigative Police located the stolen vehicle parked outside a bar on Juarez Avenue and 70th Avenue of the island from where he was arrested Monday night.
The FGE has not disclosed the cause of the woman’s death. The man accused of her murder is reported to be her boyfriend.
