Cozumel, Mahahual Mexican leaders in cruise ship passengers

Cozumel, Mahahual — The state of Quintana Roo has been listed as the state with the highest percentage of cruise travelers to the country already this year.

The Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) reported that for Quintana Roo, Cozumel and Mahahual are the two main ports with Cozumel topping the list.

They say that during the first quarter of 2019, 2.7 million cruise passengers have landed at Mexican ports with 1.9 million of them doing so in Quintana Roo, giving the state 69 percent of the cruise travel industry.

The agency says that of the 1.9 million state cruise passengers, 1.4 million docked on the island of Cozumel, with the balance docking from cruise ships at the port of Mahahual.

The SCT says that each month, approximately 100 cruise ships land at the two major ports of Quintana Roo with an average of 3,000 passengers.

According to the federal agency, seven out of every 10 passengers who cruised to Mexico in 2018, did so via a route to Quintana Roo.

Last year, Cozumel recorded a growth of 4.6 percent with just over 4.2 million cruise ship passengers, 189,338 more than 2017.

The Secretariat of Communications and Transportation says that already this year, the state has seen a 10.3 percent increase in the arrival of cruise ship passengers.
