Cozumel firemen extinguish fast moving neighborhood weed fire

Cozumel, Q.R. — A weed fire that quickly spread in a vacant lot was attended to by Cozumel firemen Wednesday. Flames took no time to devour the contents of the lot due to the strong winds.

Firemen Ernesto Miranda and Daniel Euan were at the scene of the vacant lot on 70th Avenue and First Street in the Flores Magón neighborhood in response to reports. There, they spent approximately half an hour dealing with flames to prevent them from spreading.

It is believed the inferno spread after an attempt to self-burn the lot free of weeds.

In a statement, Patronato de Bomberos de Cozumel reported “our fire crew responded today to a report of brush burning on a vacant lot. Our unit, operated by Ernesto Miranda and Daniel Euan, managed to extinguish the fire of approximately 28 square meters.

“Thanks to their quick response and efficiency, we managed to control the fire in just 30 minutes using 1,500 liters of pressurized water.

“We want to remind you that burning brush is a risk for everyone. Not only can it spread quickly and cause damage to property and the environment, but it can also endanger the health and safety of people and animals.”
