Cozumel authorities met with gunfire responding to island dispute

Cozumel, Q.R. — A man who was involved in a shootout with island police has died in hospital. The unnamed man died early Monday in the General Hospital after authorities repelled his attack while responding to a report.

Authorities repelled the attack after being met with gunfire Sunday night.

The incident happened Sunday around 10:00 p.m. at kilometer 4.5 of the Transversal de Cozumel Highway in the El Mexicano neighborhood. Municipal police along with elements from the Navy were responding to the report of an altercation inside a home when they were met with gunfire.

The man fired at officials from inside his home. Police repelled the attack, injuring the man with a hit to his abdomen. He was transferred to hospital where he is reported to have later died.

The scene was cordoned off while FGE personnel collected evidence. During the on-site investigation, two men were arrested for obstructing justice. They were taken to the municipal jail. They are reported to be relatives of the man who fired shots at police from inside the house.

Two people were arrested from the scene Sunday night.

According to Fernando González Felipe, the Director of Public Security of Cozumel, “there was a report through 911 which was addressed by various agencies. One person was injured and transferred to hospital.

“The FGE will be in charge of conducting the corresponding investigations.” González Felipe did not provide additional information regarding the dispute or the man shot.
