CFE installs generators to deal with Chiquilá blackouts during project

Chiquilá, Q.R. — Portable generators have been brought in by the CFE to provide electricity to residents while they complete a project. The four generators were brought in Monday to provide power while the company runs a cable from the mainland to the island of Holbox.

Chiquilá residents have had their power interrupted for weeks due to the ongoing island project.

Joel Pino Álvarez, Chiquilá mayor, says he hopes the portable generators will help solve the problem of power outages, especially for local businesses who need to keep food items refrigerated.

Both Chiquilá and Holbox residents have been affected with ongoing power outages in an attempt to change the cable, which is being changed to deal with the island’s demand for electricity.

On Tuesday, Holbox mayor Alejandro Cañedo Cantú reported that the CFE line change project has been suspended since CFE and ejidos could not come to a payment agreement.
