Cancun officers fired for stealing ‘valuable objects’ during police search operation

Cancun, Q.R. — Two female officers in Cancun have been fired after stealing items from a police scene. The two officers were part of a police operation in early December that lead to the search of a Cancun hotel.

During the search, one minor was removed from the hotel and one adult male arrested. During the operation, both Cancun police officers were seen removing “valuable objects” from the room.

Esmeralda “N” and Sofía “N” were separated from their positions Thursday after being captured on surveillance cameras stealing items during the December 7, 2023 police search operation.

State authorities were made aware of the theft after the video went viral. Other screens show the second officer moving the camera to avoid them being videoed, however, the angle still provided a visual of additional thefts from the room.

After an internal investigation, the officers were identified and relieved of their duties. The FGE has said that charges will be filed.

In a statement, the State Attorney General (FGE) said “the FGE reports the immediate dismissal of two female elements who were shown, in a video broadcast on social networks, stealing valuable objects during a procedure.

“Likewise, an investigation file was initiated to punish this type of behavior by public servants with exemplary sanctions.

“This autonomous body reaffirms its commitment to providing justice to the population, which is why the Special Prosecutor’s Office for Internal Affairs will be in charge of following said process against these women.”
