Cancun, Q.R. — Cancun firemen were called to the scene of a mid-morning gas explosion in a centrally located plaza. A buildup of LP gas has been blamed for the third-floor explosion that resulted in extensive building damage.
Firemen rushed to the scene of the explosion inside the Infinity Plaza in SM 19 Wednesday morning around 11:00 a.m. The blast was reported by nearby residents who said they heard a loud bang then saw a column of smoke coming out of the top level of the plaza.
The doors and windows on a front section of the third floor of the plaza were blown completely out and into the parking lot. No injuries were reported since the building was vacant of workers at the time of the blast.
The gas explosion happened in the middle of Hurricane Helene passing the city of Cancun. The area was cordoned off by authorities to prevent employees from entering. Civil Protection personnel have been charged with assessing the structural integrity of the building.
