Chetumal, Q.R. — Security guards from an armored truck worked fast to unload bags of cash that had just been picked up. The cash was unloaded in a parking lot where their vehicle suddenly began to burn.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon in Chetumal during a money pickup. The guards had just loaded cash into the back of their armored vehicle from a government building when it began to smoke.
Flames were seen shooting out from under the front of the vehicle while the guards tossed the cash out the back. Company security personnel were outside the truck guarding the money while they waited for authorities.
The indecent happened on the esplanade of the Bandera on Bahia Boulevard that had firemen scrambling to put it out. Paramedics were called to tend to the security guards, however, no major injuries were reported. The engine and cab of the vehicle was completely destroyed.
It is the second time in days that an armored security truck caught fire while transporting cash. Over the weekend, a truck from the same company caught fire on a Costa Maya highway. That vehicle was also completely destroyed.
