Authorities looking into arson after Cozumel firemen douse three vehicle fires

Cozumel, Q.R. — Cozumel firemen attended to the reports of three separate vehicle fires Tuesday night. It is believed that all three vehicles were intentionally set ablaze with Molotov Cocktails.

The reports began at 4:00 a.m. with a car burning on 4th Street North in the 10 de Abril neighborhood. Minutes later, a second vehicle fire was reported in the CTM neighborhood.

A third vehicle was set on fire on 125th Avenue and 3rd Street South, which was contained by its owners, however, firemen still attended the scene.

There is speculation that the vehicle fires were intentionally set, however, Cozumel Civil Protection says fire experts will determine that.

Alfredo Arellano, the Director of Cozumel Civil Protection and Firefighters said “we could not say if they were intentional since that is determined by the authority, by an expert in fire matters. The State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) is in charge of determining responsibilities and seeing what caused these fires.”

According to Arellano, “the three vehicles were on the public road. When we arrived they were lit, but not in their entirety. The three vehicles were burning in the front part on the hood. Action was taken immediately and the three vehicles were not consumed.”
