Authorities continue search for missing British tourist at Akumal

Akumal, Q.R. — Search and Rescue officials in Tulum were deployed Wednesday morning after the report of a missing man. The man, who is a British tourist, was reported as missing by his girlfriend Celia Peachey.

According to Peachey, they went swimming off the beach outside their Akumal hotel at around 8:15 a.m. They were approximately 50 meters out when they began returning to shore. When she arrived at the beach, she noticed he was missing.

The woman notified hotel security who in turn, called Emergency 911. Police and Civil Protection personnel arrived quickly and began a search for the man who has been identified as 51-year-old Paul N from London.

Civil Protection Operative Juan Carlos Medina Sosa, with four elements, helped police in a land search after receiving the emergency C-5 command center call at 9:00 a.m.

The family of the missing man rented a helicopter to help in search efforts. After nine hours of air, land and sea searching, their efforts were without success. As of Wednesday evening, there were no reports of the man having been located.
