Armored truck making ATM rounds catches fire in Chetumal

Chetumal, Q.R. — The assistance of Chetumal firemen was made Thursday after an armored security vehicle caught fire. The Cometra company truck began to emit smoke while on the corner of Avenida Juárez and Efraín Aguilar in the city’s center.

Within moments, it burst into flames. The security guards from inside were able to escape without injury. A second Cometra armored vehicle arrived to secure the buring company vehicle until firemen were able to put it out.

The entire front engine and cab area of the truck was destroyed. The Cometra truck was making rounds to fill ATMs Thursday afternoon when the incident happened. The money in the back of the truck was not effected. It was transferred to the second armored vehicle under heavy security.

Last week, an armored Cometra truck in Cancun was robbed of several million peso by one of its own security guards. Police captured the young man on nearby surveillance cameras walking away from the truck with several bags of cash. His arrest has not been announced.
