Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun continue their search for a security guard believed responsible for the heist of an armored vehicle. The robbery happened Monday afternoon behind one of the city’s largest shopping malls.
The robbery was reported after one employee elected to stay behind in the vehicle while the others went inside the mall to restock ATMs. When they returned, the man and the remaining cash were gone.
The armored cash transport vehicle was making rounds in the city when the incident happened. At least four million peso was reportedly taken from the vehicle. Cancun authorities have said that a company employee, a male who has not yet been publicly identified, is their main suspect.
In a brief, the Attorney General’s Office said “the FGE of Quintana Roo informs that it started the investigation for the events that occurred in a shopping center and – according to initial investigations – a custodian of the securities company is the main suspect.”
