Akumal, Q.R. — An American man died Sunday by drowning off a Tulum beach. Others swimming in the bay noticed the man having trouble and rushed out into the water to return him to the sand.
Beachgoers called 9-1-1 for an ambulance when they realized the man was unresponsive. According to initial reports, emergency services received a call about a person requiring CPR after being rescued from the sea by bystanders.
Civil Protection and private paramedics were first on scene Sunday afternoon in response to the 3:00 p.m. request for help. Emergency vehicles were seen parked outside the Luna Azul condominium complex from where personnel accessed the beach.

Emergency services arrived at the Playa Caribe condominium complex in Yal-Ku Cove of Akumal where they found the man laying in the sand.
Paramedics applied life-saving efforts, however, the man continued to be unresponsive. He was pronounced dead around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

He has been identified as 62 year old Joseph “N” from Missouri.

An autopsy is expected to determine the man’s official cause of death. Authorities have not said if the victim was a tourist or resident of Akumal.
