Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — The preventive police of Isla Mujeres have arrested a man related to fuel theft around the island.
Police say they have arrested 37-year-old Rogelico C. who is alleged responsible for the fuel theft of several vehicles as well as golf carts.
His arrest was made after he was seen on private security cameras outside a home on the island. After viewing the camera, the homeowner denounced the theft across social media, leading to his arrest.
However, José Carlos Pech, director of Public Safety and Traffic said that unless a formal complaint is filed against the accused, he will likely be released. He explained that the Municipal Police will only hold people in custody for 36 hours, and during this time, victims must file their complaint with the prosecutor’s office for a formal investigation to begin.
In November, an alleged repeat home invader on the island was taken into custody after he was seen fleeing a home robbery on a motorcycle, however, the man was released since no one was willing to come forward and file an official complaint.
