Akumal, Q.R. — The municipality of Akumal has counted 21 sea turtle nests already this year, reports Hector Lizárraga Cubedo, director of the Ecological Center of Akumal.
He says that already this season, 15 nests have been counted in Playa Tortugas, three in Bahía Media Luna beach, two in Akumal Sur and one in Akumal Bay.
“The first turtles of the season arrived on the coast of Villas Akumal beach on April 25, which started the annual season of the white and loggerhead species. The season starts in April and extends until November,” he explained.
Lizarraga Cubedo, doctor of oceanology explained that in mid-April, loggerhead turtles were spotted near the coasts of Akumal, which she called an unusual event since they normally prefer distant aggregation sites where they mate before arriving on beaches to lay their eggs.
Last year, the municipality recorded 481 nests that yielded 45,514 young turtles of varying species.
