Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Staff from Aguakan spent the night working on repairing a large sinkhole that appeared along Arco Vial in Playa del Carmen.
The sinkhole, which was reported by an area resident, was the result of a pipe rupture in the ground and not an underground river system, which is common in the region.
Civil Protection, transit police, public works, firemen and Aguakan were all on hand to analysis the 50 cm hole that suddenly appeared in the center of the three-lane roadway. Traffic was closed in the south-north direction while crews brought in heavy machinery to dig down to the pipe.
The hole, which looked small from a distance, was actually nearly 50 cms in diameter and five meters deep, opening to a cavern below where the water was flowing.
Crews were onsite throughout the night making the repairs.
