Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) of Solidaridad has already begun working on a comprehensive sargassum strategy for 2025.
Irving Rafael Lili Madrigal, the Director de Zona Federal Marítimo Terrestre (Zofemat), they have started work for the upcoming collection and disposal of sargassum in anticipation of the 2025 season.
“We are making a comprehensive plan for the maintenance and preservation of the beach as well as the removal of the sargassum itself,” he said.
The strategy, he explained, will prioritize the maintenance and preservation of the beach areas of Playa del Carmen. He highlighted the importance of these strategies to minimize the environmental impact and keep the beaches attractive for tourism.
The plan includes not only cleaning and collecting the sargassum, but also the use of the sifted sand and collaboration with at least six companies dedicated to transforming the sargassum into useful products such as building blocks, sandals, soap, fertilizers and compost.
In addition, the Navy (Semar) will play a key role in this effort, using its sargassum diversion barrier and specialized barges to minimize the impact of sargassum becoming stranded on the coasts of Solidaridad.
According to the monitoring of sargassum patches and their movement, a greater volume of macroalgae is expected in 2025 compared to previous years, which has led the municipality to strengthen its planning.
